Session expired and signing out
Why you are sometimes asked to sign in again, and how to sign out.
Who can do thisEvery user
Your sign-in does not last for ever. When it runs out, the portal stops and asks you to sign in again, so that nobody can carry on in your name on a computer you left open. This article explains the session-expired screen, what ends a session, and how to sign out yourself.
The session-expired screen
When your session has ended, a screen covers the page. It is in English whatever your language:
- Heading: Your session has expired
- Text: "You've been signed out to keep your account secure - sign in again to continue."
- Button: Sign in again
- Footer: Redirecting you to sign-in…
Click Sign in again to go to the sign-in page at once. If you do nothing, a short countdown runs and the portal takes you to the sign-in page by itself. Sign in as usual; see Signing in for the first time if you need a reminder of the steps.
What ends a session
- Time. Every sign-in has an expiry time. You can see it for each of your sessions under Account & securityActive sessionsManage sessions in the Expires column.
- Your workspace's session timeout. If your workspace uses single sign-on, a Tenant Admin can set how long a session lasts: 30 minutes, 1 hour, 8 hours or 24 hours. Unless it is changed, it is 8 hours. See Authentication and single sign-on.
- Signing out everywhere. Sign out of all sessions on Account & security ends every session on every device, including the one you are using.
- A password change. After you change your password, other sessions may need to sign in again.
Losing access is a different thing from an expired session. If a Tenant Admin deactivates you or removes you from the workspace, signing in again does not bring the workspace back. See Choosing and switching workspaces for the messages you see then.
Sign out
You can sign out from three places:
- The Launch Pad account menu: Sign out.
- The profile menu at the right of the top bar on the administration pages: Sign out.
- The bar at the top of My profile and Account & security: Sign out.
This signs you out on the device you are using. To sign out on all your devices at once, for example after losing a phone, use Sign out of all sessions; see Account & security.
Apps you opened from the Launch Pad run in their own tabs. On a shared computer, close those tabs as well when you sign out, or use Sign out of all sessions.
