Change the state

- Open the dropdown, which reads New state…, and pick the stage. Only moves the type allows from the current stage are listed.
- If the new stage requires a reason, a box marked Reason required appears. Type the reason.
- Click Apply.
The lifecycle stepper at the top of the page moves to the new stage, and the change is written to the asset's History.

When the move is refused
| Message | What to do |
|---|---|
| Assign the asset to a person first. | The stage needs an assignee. Assign the asset, then try again. See Assign and take back an asset. |
| Unassign the asset before this transition. | The stage needs the asset unassigned. Set it to unassigned first. |
| A reason is required for this transition. | Type a reason. |
| That transition is not allowed. | The type does not allow this move. Go through another stage, or ask an Application Administrator to change the type's lifecycle. |
| No transitions available | The current stage has no onward moves. |
Good to know
- The control only shows for Application Administrators. Technicians can ask an administrator, or use an onboarding or offboarding run.
- Retired is a stage, not the end. To take an asset out of the register for good, dispose of it or return it; see Dispose of or return an asset.
- A rule can also change the state when an alert opens; see Automation rules.
